Don Snow is VERY knowledgeable, and I respect him IMMENSELY for this. The only thing I found really frustrating in his class was how hard he was on grading. The greater majority of my papers were B+'s, and I got lots of feedback commenting on my thesis and praising certain aspects of my papers--but pointing out usually one error or fallback, and I felt that one minor error should not prevent someone from obtaining an A. Other than the grading issue, he is a very good prof.

Professor Snow is, first and foremost, and extremely intelligent professor. He knows what he's talking about, whether or not it's about our Core books or the history of the Civil War. I agree with the other reviewer in the sense that he is a very hard grader. The highest grade I ever received on a paper was an A- but, when you do receive a good grade in his class, you feel like you deserved it. He's very organized, knows each book inside and out, and comes prepared to teach. I went in and had an hour long meeting with him for each of my eight Core papers. He has fairly specific office hours but is willing to give each student a lot of time. He writes what he calls "Love Letters" to each student which are one page, single-spaced responses to each essay. Some people complain that their Core teachers only put checks at the end of paragraphs or write "Good" but one of Professor Snow's best qualities is that he gives you a TON of feedback.

Don Snow is a really intelligent guy, and his lectures in CORE were always pretty interesting.. he prepared himself very well for our classes and he made the discussions pretty interesting. The one thing that nagged me was that he was SO hard in grading our papers. I heard that he told someone about one our sets of papers and said, "no one got 'A's, only a couple of people got "B"s, the rest got 'C's." I have something morally wrong with this, because shouldn't the best few papers get "A"s? But no one did. Anyway, it was just frustrating. He only once give us the opportunity to correct our papers as well, which could have helped us improve both our writing and our grades more. Would have been nice! To sum up: smart, intelligent professor. Very hard grader. He's also a little arrogant sometimes (in some of his comments).

I would highly recommend taking a class from Snow before graduating from Whitman. He is a brillaint and inspiring person and he'll make you a better writer by the time you leave his class. He also has a fantastic way of speaking so that class seems more like story time than a lecture.
