After two semester of class with Professor Dott I'm still not sure what I think of him. On the positive side, he is a very friendly individual and he does a very nice job of moderating discussion in class. He really lets students voice their own opinions and lets the discussion center around the topics that the class is most interested in. His constant attempts to insert relevant Chinese history into our discussions were also rather endearing.

This being said, his class is almost ENTIRELY based on student discussion. There were many a class period where he probably only opened his mouth two or three times and while this is nice at times, I often felt like I was looking for more from him. As a result of this, I really don't feel like I learned anything from him during the course of the class because of his very hands-off approach to teaching. The work load for the class was very low compared to many other core classes, but his comments and suggestions on papers were almost non-existent. I don't feel like my writing improved much, if at all, during the class and last time I checked, this was supposed to be one of the main goals of the Whitman Core program. Visits during his office hours were also rather unproductive in this sense.

Overall, a nice guy, but not a professor that ignites that spark that you need to get excited about a class.

I really don't care for Professor Dott as a professor. He is a nice enough person, but his teaching style is really ineffective. He tries to cover way too much and asks you to write really general papers that are difficult in that when writing them, you don't feel like you have a grasp on what you are supposed to be showing knowledge of. His grading is pretty hard, much more so than I was expecting. Whitman could really use a far better Asian history professor who is more captivating and exciting.

Super easy, but that sacrafices quality and depth of analysis. Mostly just bland. But again: super easy, super low work-load.

Dott is . . . bland. I've had him for two classes (I'm reserving the other to protect my anonymity), and he has failed to awaken within me a passionate interest in Chinese history. I've found his grading to be on the hard end of average, but he's not unreasonably picky. He's very knowledgeable and competent, just . . . bland.

Brian is super nice, and an easy grader. If you do the work, you'll learn the info and come out with an A no problem.

Professor Dott is a great teacher. There's no doubt that he is passionate about his field, and I always found his lectures and insight to be particulary interesting. He's a fair grader and he's very friendly. All in all, a great guy.

Dr. Dott is not the most animated lecturer, but he knows his stuff and is enthusiastic about the material. He is a good teacher and a fair grader. He selects interesting readings and allows for ample opportunities to discuss them in class, even though most of the class period is devoted to lecture.
