Andrea is, simply put, a phenomenal prof! Her lecture style is very unorthodox and informal which may turn some people off but personally I find it to be a nice change. Classes are always extremely engaging, she's big on having students demonstrate their knowledge of key concepts in class and she will stay on a topic until she's sure everyone's got it. The material is challenging at times but she's always around (often late into the evenings) to help answer questions. As long as you ATTEND CLASS, you'll do fine. Because the textbook is written on a somewhat higher level than is appropriate for an intro astro class, the vast majority of the material on tests comes from lectures and you will probably end up really confused if you don't go to class. The outdoor telescope labs and planetarium were great too.

Bottom line is: take a class from Andrea. She's definitely one of the most fun profs at whitman and you won't regret it.

Professor Dobson seems to have the cognitive capacitance of a 10 year old. She obviously favors the astronomy majors and the wealthy students and loves to play the game "guess what teacher's thinking" with her tests. If she gives a deadline, don't follow it. She'll take papers several weeks late with no points taken off and doesn't require your presence the day of the tests. Although it's not very hard to get a good grade in her class, you'd have to be an idiot to think she's a good professor.

Andrea is very dedicated to her profession. She always strives to make sure that each of her students understands the material. She is also very accommodating to the various types of students. For the non-Astro majors she keeps it simple, while also providing ample opportunity for the Astro majors to go more in-depth.

Andrea is absolutely fun. She seems to know everything astro. She's kind of a grammar / spelling / paper writing nazi, but that may be because she also teaches core. Her classes are always interesting because she doesn't hesitate to go off on a tangent in pursuit of the student's interest. But astro is cool on its own, so one doesn't have to do much to make it interesting.

She uses lots of pictures, graphs and stuff like that, and she's low on the math, if you have mathphobia. She's always available - kind of feels like she lives in the science building and has all the time in the world for students. It's a hard choice between U. J. Sofia and Andrea - I'll suggest you take classes from both!

Andrea takes alot of time outside of class to help with homework and answer questions. Her lecture style is very informal, but I see that as a positive. She has a great sense of humor and is easy to ask questions of. Problem sets are assigned once every other week and a research paper and presentation are assigned in the latter half of the course.

A great professor who makes herself available both in and outside of class. She goes out of her way to provide opportunities for students to explore the subject of astronomy in terms of optional field trips to the telescope out in the wheat fields. I'm trying to think of a negative... her lecture style gave me pause at first until I became accustomed to it. It is very informal.

Andrea is a truly caring professor who accomedates students' needs readily. Many times i turned in assignments late without her questioning why and getting very few points deducted. She also has a great sense of humor and is a highly intelligent woman with a lot of interesting passions.
